The Best Things In Life

Washington Square Park, New York, NY

this photo reminds me of the endless summers of my childhood....those hot August days in Toronto with my family, when it was too hot to eat anything but popsicles and ice cream

Bahamas Insta-Diary

With spring nowhere in sight, my sister and I decided to ditch our parkas (and mittens, scarves, earmuffs, boots, & even socks!)for a long weekend in the Bahamas. We started our days with a morning run on the beach and then sunned ourselves crazy until late, late afternoon on the beach.  It felt amazing to spend a good part of each day with less than one layer of clothing on!

Elephant Love

A while back, Peter and I visited the Elephant Nature Park, a short distance from Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.  The park is home to both young and old elephants who have been rescued from extreme abuse at the hands of those who used them for profit.  Some were blinded by their owners when they did not perform their work duties well - usually because they were overworked and malnourished. Some were forced to beg on city streets like a sideshow act, and one was even forced to keep working after watching her baby die in a work accident.  As I pet their massive trunks and fed them squash, pineapples, and bananas, I got a sense of just how intelligent and sensitive these creatures are.  My heart broke at the thought of how much they once suffered and the physical and emotional scars they now carry.  It was amazing to be able to connect with them so closely, even if it was just for a short time.

$100 a photo

The first time I picked up an SLR camera was in high school - it was a Pentax K1000.  I later inherited my uncle's creaky, old Canon A-1, which is the camera I took this picture with.  This is a favourite of my photos because I think it came together so nicely in a split second - the writing on her chest, the way she's gesturing with her hand, the money in her other hand....you can try & try for a photo like this but most of the time, it just happens and you have to be there to press the shutter at the exact moment.
