A Moment In Brooklyn
These girls totally reminded me of my sister & I when we were around their age. I have two sisters - one is much younger, and I'm only a year and a half apart from the other. The two of us did everything together. We teased (and were teased by) the same kids, had the same adventures, got in the same trouble, and our parents even dressed us in the same clothes up to a certain age. Like any family, we've had tons of ups & downs, various growing pains, and the three of us are quite different from one another in many, many ways but we've been spending a lot of time together lately and I've been thinking about how lucky I am to have a family with sisters.

Close Up
Sometimes, I wish had more opportunity to explain to people what it was that made me want to photograph them. The girl in this picture had such a great look. You can't see it here but she had rows of tight braids on both sides of her head and really graphic tribal printed leggings. She and her friends ran straight into the fountain at Washington Square and then plunked down on the pavement to dry off in the late afternoon sun. Initially, her style caught my eye but I think it was also how naturally cool she seemed to be. When I asked to take her picture, she was completely unselfconscious.

Love Is Love
some images contain nudity
The Pride Parade happens during Pride Week in Toronto. I took these photos at the 33rd annual Pride Parade, which was on Sunday, June 30 this year. To me, Pride is at once a celebration of diverse sexual and gender identities and a celebration of tolerance and love over bigotry and hate. Pride is for gay, straight, bi, trans, truck drivers, the fat, the thin, dogs, babies, ballerinas, mermaids - anyone who has an open heart and mind. It's an enormous, wild, hot & sweaty street party and though it seems that sexuality is at the centre of the celebrations, I think that it's a joyful gathering of acceptance in the broadest sense too.
