Mr. Freezies

A decisive moment that serendipitously turned out even better than I could have hoped.

I took this photo on a hot July day a couple of summers ago.  Looking at it now, I think it encapsulates what I love about street photography - the split-second decision to take a photo, the elements beyond my control falling together perfectly(like the way the boys' hands are positioned, the Mr. Freezies, the way one boy is looking at me while the other is looking up with a funny face). The exciting and challenging thing about street photography is that moments like this happen in fractions of a second.  And that is what makes it feel so good to capture them on film.

Gone Fishing

In Nova Scotia, I loved being reminded of the East Coast's strong seafaring traditions everywhere we went.  Visiting the fishing villages was like being on the fringe of a romantic storybook about life by the sea.

9/11 Memorial in NYC

The Tiles For America project was started in 2001 by a pottery artist as a memorial to 9/11.  Many people participated in the project by painting tiles to express healing messages.  One day in 2012, Peter and I found these beautiful tiles hung on a chain link fence at the corner of 7th Ave & 11th St - by chance - while walking from the West Village to lower Manhattan.  We were very lucky to discover this wonderful installation in its original location before it was dismantled.  

Today is the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 disaster and I thought about this lovely memorial.

Windy Day

I took this photo of Jennifer Aniston when she came to promote the film Life Of Crime during the Toronto International Film Festival last year.  It's one of my favourite film fest photos because her famously perfect hair is blowing everywhere and it feels so candid and natural even though there were wild fans and complete mayhem all around her.
